According to the Mexican constitution the official name of the country is the United States of Mexico, and the seat of the federal government is Mexico City, known as Ciudad de México or México D.F. (Distrito Federal) in the Spanish language.
Bounded in the north by the U.S.A., Mexico is situated between the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean to the east. The country’s southern neighbours are Belize and Guatemala. Mexico is the fifth largest country in the Americas, covering almost 2 million square kilometres, and the fourteenth largest independent nation in the world with a population of around 109 million.
The Mexican economy is strongly linked to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and by GDP is the twelfth largest economy in the world by purchasing power parity. One of the country’s principle sources of foreign exchange is money sent from abroad by Mexican workers overseas, which amounts to 3% of GDP.
